Adapted from the first volume of Stephen King’s magnum opus, The Dark Tower, “And the Gunslinger Followed” introduces the character of Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger in an apocalyptic parallel world. For years Roland has been hunting the villainous and mystical Man in Black. After being forced to commit horrible atrocities on his search, he has tracked the man in black to a vast desert. Very close to his quarry, the gunslinger encounters Brown, an old desert hermit. As the gunslinger takes rest in Brown’s home, the Man in Black takes the opportunity to spring one last trap on Roland. Preying on the gunslinger’s guilt, a vision of the Man in Black appears and beckons Roland to kill Brown and give up his quest. Denying the man in black’s bargain, Roland spares Brown’s life. Reassuring himself that he is close to his quarry (and that he still has the moral high-ground), Roland bids farewell to Brown and returns on his quest.
