The Magic Opera monologue
Influenza short film
Jay Milton, a disillusioned pill-popping police detective, has just learned that Shane Conway, a man he helped convict of murder, was actually innocent. Unfortunately, the news has come too late, as Conway has been executed. His superior officers are less than pleased and send him on a forced vacation. Despite the urgings of his partner, Carl, Milton blames himself for Conway’s death. As he leaves, a strange woman watches him. Back at his shabby apartment, Milton is punishing himself for the Conway’s death by taking a dangerous amount of pills. Before he can ingest too many, he hears a scream. Outside, a woman claims that she was attacked and she sends Milton after the assailant. Thinking she needs his help and in a drugged stupor, Milton follows the lead, but only finds the woman, who shoots him. She reveals that she was Conway’s girlfriend Mary, and that she is distraught over having believed the man she loved to be a killer. When Milton tells her that he understands her reasons to kill him, she gets cold feet. Just as she decides to forgive Milton, Carl arrives and kills her, not knowing that she wasn’t going through with it. She dies as Milton passes out. Milton wakes up in the hospital and is told that the pills he attempted to overdose with actually saved his life.
