Jake Goldman and his family go to watch his son practice for his high school talent show. His son performs a rap with his friends, tossing money off the stage while their teachers laugh. In an attempt to spare his son from further embarrassment, Jake shares a story about his high school rap group The Smoothboyz.
The Smoothboyz were Jake’s rap group from the 1980s. The guys dreamed of being the best at their high school talent show. They struggled to pick stage names that suited their rap personas and practiced their songs and dance moves after school. The guys perform but don’t get as much attention as Qraig with his poem about chicken.
He uses his story to convince his son to do something that he’s good at instead of what he thinks will be cool. His friends continue to do their rap, winning as a comedy group. His son, however, gets what he wants when a girls dance troop ask him to perform with them.
