Cassie Joy an eight-year-old African American girl is living in southern Georgia with her parents see things that aren’t there. Her mother believes that the visions are evil and that her daughter is possessed by some kind of demon. Her father, Pa (AKA William) encourages his daughter’s imagination and takes her with him on his trip into town to Shirley’s ballet studio. Shirley is a white woman whom Pa has had a romantic relationship with. While Pa visits with Shirley, who is leaving for Paris soon, Cassie watches the other girls dance wishing that she could join in. Soon Cassie begins mimicking the ballerinas with surprising grace.
The next day Mother takes Cassie to church to see the Reverend Locke, an over zealous man who is all fire and brimstone. He performs and exorcism on Cassie and beats the little girl into submission. William returns home that night to find his daughter has been severely beaten at the behest of his wife. Outraged he takes Cassie to Shirley, where they clean Cassie’s wounds and decide that she would be better suited with Shirley in Paris. William says goodbye to Cassie Joy and Shirley at the train station. Cassie is left to start her new life as a ballerina. Flash Forward to: A teenaged Cassie appears on a stage in full ballerina costume. Her imagination springs to life as she performs. Tall grass grows around her onstage and butterflies dance with her once again. She finishes her routine to a standing ovation.
